Interview with lecturer at Regent's University London and BBC staff

EI: Hello, Olga! Please tell us a little about yourself.

I came to the UK back in 1983, marrying a Briton. My first job in London was the famous bookstore "Foyles", where I worked in the Department of modern English literature. It was a difficult but very interesting job in which I met with the major British publishers and understand the business of selling books. After about four months I was asked to take the test on the Russian Service BI-BI-SI for the position of translator and producer, which I successfully passed, with the result that a month later I was offered a job as a translator and producer. I worked in the Russian Service BI-BI-SI about 10 years in the state, and then several years as a freelance reporter and producer. At the same time, I successfully passed an interview at the European Business School for the position of teacher of business Russian language and I was offered a job as a lecturer of the Russian language - at first on an hourly basis and then as full-time teachers. Subsequently, the European Business School was transformed into the Regent's University London, where I work and today I teach in all programs of Russian business language programs for beginner to advanced level program for students that have passed the annual practice in Russia.

EI: You started Your career in Russia and later taught at several foreign universities. What, in Your opinion, the main differences between higher education in Russia and the UK?

Yes, I started my career as an English teacher at the physics Department of Moscow state University. In my opinion, the difference between higher education in Russia and great Britain that in Russia, the volume of subjects is much greater than in the UK, but, in my opinion, in the UK items, I mean Humanities, explored deeper than in Russia.

EI: who, in Your opinion, Regent's University London is the best choice? What are the advantages of learning in a private University?

In our University there are students from different countries of the world, and we, as University staff and students who appreciate its international atmosphere. I think that our University is the best choice for those who want to do international business and to learn languages. Knowledge of business and languages increases the competitiveness of our graduates and contributes to their employment. Our students appreciate the great variety on offer at Regent's University London programmes and courses, high qualification of our lecturers and teachers, the opportunity to study in the target language country during the year, the perfect technical equipment of the University, its splendid library, its Central location in the Park Regent's, and most importantly - individual approach to each student, what distinguishes our private University from the state higher education institutions.

EI: What you need to become a successful professional in the field of linguistics? Which position expect graduates of Your programs?

This question is not easy to answer because each person solves this problem for yourself individually. But I believe that a successful linguist is a person who monitors the development of linguistic science, reading the scientific literature, participates in scientific conferences and carries out research. Our graduates have excellent work prospects – they are a great pleasure to work large banks, not just British but international, our graduates are also in demand in various business areas, ranging from fashion and business to computing and information technology. Many of them after graduation, open your own companies and firms.

EI: You Have a lot of experience not only teaching, but working in the BBC World Service, Russian Service. Please tell us what do You do in the BBC.

In the Russian Service BI-BI-SI there is a principle of interchangeability – this means that all the employee should be able to perform all types of work - translate and read the news, produce in the Studio to write programs in any topic, interview, doing press reviews, to record, to pick the music for the programs, conduct reportings from places of events, etc. than I did in over 10 years, working for the Russian Service BI-BI-SI.

EI: thank you for the interview! What advice would You give for our readers?

I think Regent's University London is an excellent choice, first because we offer a huge selection of programmes and modules, we employ only qualified and experienced teachers, the University has a great technical equipment, there is a specially equipped computer classes, a great gym, movie theatre and technically equipped library. In Regent's University London is also very rich student life, students have the opportunity to become members of various clubs and hobby groups, exercise, participate in Student Council, etc., I highly recommend prospective students to choose to study our University - Regent's University London, which will give them the opportunity to not only get a great education but also to learn first hand about life in the UK and get to know its cultural and historical heritage.
