York University awarded "University of the year 2010", awarded by the magazine "times Higher education". The Committee on awards noted that the University has demonstrated not only an impressive list of academic achievements and scientific discoveries, but success in the social sphere. Most outstanding academic accomplishments this year include: completion on schedule and within budget (£500 million) first phase of the campus expansion, obtaining for the third consecutive year the annual Royal award (Queen's Anniversary Prize), and draw up the genetic map of Artemisia, which was an important contribution to the fight against malaria. Additionally, York University has made serious investments in the arts and Humanities, having invested 11 million pounds in the construction of the building for its Humanities research centre and Institute for effective education.
