Advice to students about living and studying in the UK from Dr at University of Greenwich Anna Yakovenko

Dr. Anna Yakovenko of the University of Greenwich:

Pleased to note that over the past two or three years the number of students from countries of the former Soviet Union coming to study at British universitieshas increased. The exhibition, where universities present their programs are held regularly not only in Metropolitan cities but also in the periphery. British teachers also began to visit such exhibitions, giving potential students a great opportunity to get answers to their questions first hand.

However, there are still some of the challenges our students facewhen coming to study in Britain.

English

One of such problems is the lack of training in the English language. Yes, schools well explain the grammar and rules of writing, but the University must have more specialized training. It is very important to a wide vocabulary for the profession for which the students planiruet to learn. Also, many schools teach the American language version. This complicates the process of assimilation of students in the UK, as well as prevents them from receiving high grades for written work. It is also important to practice the skills of perception of various accents by ear. The fact that universities in the UK, many teachers are foreigners, and to learn to understand them takes practice, patience and time. However, if students strive to improve their skills and devote enough time to read, write and communicate with faculty and students, the language barrier disappears within the first year of study. Communication outside the University with native speakers is also good, and there are many opportunities – clubs, sports clubs and travel.

Money and time

It is important to calculate the potential financial costs and time spent for study, work and leisure. In my practice there were cases when the students began to fall behind in school due to stressful situations about the lack of funds or lack of time. In addition to the payment for the training program should definitely have the funds for accommodation, food, travel and of course leisure. Costs during the first year of training is usually higher, as are all accustomed to the new surroundings and way of life in different ways.

Approach to learning

The British approach to teaching often becomes a "shock" for students, the first time faced with this system. In British Universities most of the time students are engaged in independent work - preparing for practical classes, writing term papers and essays, individual and group presentations. Such a schedule may initially relax the students from former Soviet States, which ultimately can lead to pass strict deadlines for coursework or stress during exam preparation. At the same time, if skillfully dispose of free time in the UK there are many opportunities to do interesting things and develop as a person.

Students need to be prepared for the fact that despite the fact that the number of subjects studied at the University during the year, limited to the approved curriculum, depth of study is laid by teachers and assigned students individually. Often lectures are held not only by University professors but also representatives of enterprises and organizations. All the knowledge gained in lectures is reinforced during practical zanyatii, as well as from books and magazines. Therefore, we need to focus on independent hard work and to do it regularly.

During the year the knowledge is assessed through written work, presentations, and other forms of checks, but exams are usually conducted at the end of the school year. All exams (except speaking and dissertation defenses) are in writing and strictly limited in time. Copying from print or Internet in coursework and in examinations severely punished and may lead to expulsion from the University. In most cases, the teachers check the work without seeing the names of the students. This approach ensures objectivity in the evaluation understanding of the subject, erudition students and critical to present the material.

Study and work

Despite the large amount of information provided to students, and support from the various services of the universities, the students themselves need to make efforts to find work. Most students combine studies and work, and it allows you to accumulate the necessary experience and ability to rotate in a business environment. Noted that those Studen who have practice at the enterprises (in the summer or during a gap-year), achieving better results, write the best dissertation and find a job faster. However, you have to manage wisely and time and effort study was not injured. It is also necessary to develop and maintain the circle. Of course this is not right and is not automatically arriving in the country, all find friends. But you have to tune that all issues are resolved much faster and less painful if the person is not closed in itself and open to contact.

Preparing for study in UK

I would be very advised to buy textbooks in core subjects for those who come to study in program of bakalavriata. Students-undergraduates very helpful to enlist in the British library, as most of the items in the magistracy is based on the materials published in periodicals and academic journals.

For more confidence in the correctness of the choice of study in the UK, it is possible to think and to enroll in summer College, foundation or pre-Master's programmes. This will help to assess the level of training, to try to live in a new environment and ultimately contribute to better results. Many people try to shift the responsibility for the success of students teachers. Nevertheless, the results and success is very individual and will depend on how many people are willing to put in the effort and time.
