Student life

Our Main Campus is scenic but compact. You can walk nearly anywhere in less than 15 minutes or take a continuous shuttle service. The shuttle also runs between Main and Health Science campuses so students with activities on both have dependable transportation.

As a UT student, you’ll have a comprehensive team and special services supporting you, even beyond your professors and advisers:

  • The Office of International Student and Scholar Services focuses specifically on helping you succeed in all aspects of life at UT and in Toledo, including immigration issues, applying for an Ohio driver’s license, housing and more.
  • Success coaches - Each incoming UT student is assigned a success coach as a one-person resource for your questions. This is the person you can call, email, text or visit to solve problems and use as a sounding board, when needed.
  • The Center for International Studies and Programs is committed to cross-cultural interaction, global engagement and value-added experiences for all UT students.
  • The American Language Institute is an immersive program that helps students become proficient in the English language and western culture.
  • Rocket Recycle is a bicycle loan program specifically for international students.

Members of the UT community even open their homes to international students during holidays such as Thanksgiving, offering a slice of American traditions and warm hospitality.

Because all freshman and sophomore students who live more than an hour outside Toledo are required to live on campus, we do our best to make your time at UT rewarding and fun.

Life at UT is enhanced by a number of experiences outside the classroom, including:

  • More than 350 student organizations for every interest you can imagine.
  • The Student Rec Center, featuring modern fitness equipment, indoor track, Olympic-sized swimming pool, group classes, climbing wall and outdoor courts. Admission is free to all UT students.
  • Varsity athletic events (UT is a member of the Division I’s Mid-American Conference), including men’s and women’s basketball; soccer; football; and more. Admission to all home events is free.
  • Res hall living/learning communities that bring students of similar interests together to explore their interests and build friendships.
  • Club and intramural sports at all proficiency levels, including ice hockey, sailing, basketball, tennis and more.
  • Theatrical and musical performances; fine-art shows; and prestigious speakers such as entrepreneur/reality TV star Daymond John and Apple icon Steve Wozniak.
  • Cellular service through Rocket Wireless located right on Main Campus.

UT takes your welfare seriously, as well. Security officers are on campus 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, and we employ numerous measures to ensure your safety, including a NightWatch escort service and UT Alert, a quick means of notifying students by text or email of a situation of concern. To ensure good health is a priority, UT also offers a student health clinic on our Main Campus, as well as the comprehensive services of The UT Medical Center on our Health Science Campus.

Toledo, called the “Glass City” for its history of glass manufacturing and known worldwide as “Home of the Jeep,” offers many cultural, athletic and entertainment attractions, including:

  • A thriving live-music scene
  • The Toledo Museum of Art – home of UT’s Center for the Visual Arts
  • A thriving live-music scene
  • The Toledo Symphony and the Toledo Opera
  • The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium (ranked the #1 zoo in the U.S. in the USA Today Reader’s Choice Awards)
  • Two local sports teams (Toledo Walleye hockey and Toledo Mud Hens baseball)
  • Metroparks Toledo, a number of natural parks for hiking, bicycling, running/walking and enjoying the outdoor gifts of the Midwest. One of the trails runs right through UT’s beautiful Main Campus.
  • A variety of ethnic and American-style restaurants for casual and formal dining. There’s even a Russian grocery/deli in the area.

As U.S. News & World Reports’ #2 ranked U.S. city for outdoor lovers, you’ll find plenty of fun in the sun, snow, water and trails of Toledo.

Accommodation

Your “home away from home” will be in one of our nine on-campus residence halls. This housing offers a variety of living styles, from traditional rooms with shared bathrooms, to suite-style living with two or three bedrooms linked by a common area and restrooms for each suite. Most students elect meal plans, which provide a set amount of money to spend on food each semester.

The cuisine at UT is a mix of cultural and local favorites. Whether you prefer pizza and sandwiches, diner-style suppers or even sushi, our res hall cafeterias will keep you fueled. Dining dollars from students’ meal plans also can be used at campus eateries, such as Starbuck’s, Magic Wok, Steak ‘n Shake and more.
