University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Student life

Currently, the university has two campuses, totaling 1,140 ha: City Campus, which is north of downtown Lincoln, and south of the old Nebraska State Fair grounds and East Campus which is approximately two miles east-northeast of City Campus.

Both campuses have an institute area and a residential area. The institute area consists of the departments, headquarters, governing body, research institutes, laboratories, theaters, auditoriums, recreation centers, fraternity and sorority housing, power plants, facilities and managements.

The institute area occupies 248 ha combining the campuses. The larger part is the residential district, which consists of student housing, residential apartments, and on campus living for faculties in apartments or individual cottages.

Beside the two main campuses, UNL also operates the UNL technology park on the north side of Lincoln. The park covers an area of 10 ha. It is supplied by some laboratories on artificial intelligence.

There are more than 400 student organizations to check out, including a large Greek community with more than 40 fraternities and sororities that represent a variety of interests.

UNL students and UNL as a whole generally has something going on at any given moment. Every other week is often has a weeklong theme with programs and things for students interested in said theme. Husker sports are a very big part of this school. Husker Football home games will dominate Saturdays in the Fall, basketball and volleyball are very well-supported, and intramural sports are also popular.

The campus has a lot of outdoor volleyball and basketball courts and a lot of nice, turfed fields. The recreation center was recently remodeled, and there is plenty to do there if a student likes working out.

Outside of campus, Lincoln has a wide variety of things to do. There's a great nightlife at the Haymarket downtown, great restaurants, movie theaters, and a few shopping malls close by.

Accommodation

The University offers several housing options to undergraduate students, from the rich diversity of our residence halls to the more self-reliant environment of apartment-style living.

If a student is looking to meet people, the living style in traditional halls is a great way to make new friends. Traditional halls feature two-person rooms with community bathrooms including private shower/toilet areas that are cleaned daily by Housing staff. A 5– or 7–day unlimited meal plan, in-room refrigerator/freezer and independent control over heat and air conditioning are a few traditional hall amenities.

In suite-style there are two types of rooms – double bedroom, which are designated for freshmen students, and single bedroom units for upperclassmen. Suite-style features a living room area, snack-prep area with a full sized refrigerator and microwave, sink and countertop area, as well as private in-suite showers and vanities.

Residence halls are single occupancy rooms designed for upperclassmen, graduate students or non-traditional freshman (resident 20 years of age or older with a freshman classification) ready for a more independent living environment.

All freshmen must live on the school’s campus in downtown Lincoln and can bring cars if they wish.

Career services

UNL career services gives students a one-stop start for job vacancies (business, government/internships), job seeking tips, career information, employer information, and campus interviews. Career services will try to simplify the maze and direct students to the "best" resources as well as provide an effective starting point to other specialized resources.
