Student life

More than 800 student organizations were recognized at the University Park campus. In addition, the university has one of the largest Greek systems in the country, with approximately 12 percent of the University Park population affiliated. 


The university’s also famous for its developed student media, which includes annual student yearbook, the student-run radio station, a student-run newspaper, a student-run independent news website, a student-run humor magazine. 


Accommodation

There are seven housing complexes located on campus for students attending the University Park campus. Each complex consists of a few separate buildings that are dormitories and a commons building, which has lounges, the help desk for the complex, mailboxes for each dormitory room, a small food shop, and a cafeteria-style room. Different floors within a building may be designated as a Special Living Option. They are offered to members of certain student groups (such as sororities), students studying particular majors, students who wish to engage in a particular life style, or other groups who wish to pursue similar goals.

The campus


Its University Park campus, the flagship campus, lies within the Borough of State College and College Township. It has two law schools, Penn State Law, on the school's University Park campus, and Dickinson Law, located in Carlisle, 90 miles south of State College. The College of Medicine is located in Hershey. Penn State has another 19 commonwealth campuses and 5 special-mission campuses located across the state.

The largest of the university's 24 campuses, University Park is almost entirely within the boundaries of State College borough, a site chosen because it is near the geographic center of the state. 

It is the most selective campus in the Penn State system, due primarily to the fact that students select University Park as their first-choice campus at a far greater rate than the university's other undergraduate campuses. 

University Park offers a number of student services, including nonremedial tutoring, women's center, placement service, day care, health service, health insurance. It also offers campus safety and security services like 24-hour foot and vehicle or student patrols, late night transport service, 24-hour emergency telephones, lighted pathways, controlled dormitory access (key, security card, etc). Alcohol is permitted for students of legal age at University Park.

Career services

The university holds many special career events such as Fall and Spring Career Days, C.A.R.E. Fair, Graduate and Professional School Weeks.


91% of students get job offers by 3 months after graduation. 42% of graduated students work in technical specialization, 39% in business. Median base salary of graduates is about $100,000.

Location

State College is a college town, dominated economically and demographically by the presence of the University Park campus of the Pennsylvania State University, surrounded by large tracts of farmland, and an expanse of mountains and forests.. Though "Happy Valley" is another often-used term to refer to the State College area, the term also includes the borough and the townships of College, Harris, Patton, and Ferguson.


State College has a humid continental climate, where average temperature in winter is about -3°C and about 22.3°C in summer.
