Ohio University

Student life

Constructed while President Thomas Jefferson was in office, New England and Early Americana Federalist themes are prevalent in the university's earliest architecture. Development of the campus began in 1812 with the erection of the university's central building, Manasseh Cutler Hall, a designated and registered national landmark, and built only 20 years after the White House's construction.

Sometimes cited informally as a 'public ivy' and one of the most beautiful residential campuses in America, the university has also adopted modern elements into its campus without displacing these early American period structures. The historic climate of campus and its early colonial roots prompted the Time Magazine to describe the university as "Harvard on the Hocking", a reference which has grown in popularity over the years.

There are lots of services and facilities for students on-campus including housing and dining, sports and fitness, a library and 10 research centers, clubs, fraternities and sororities, shops and many others.

In Ohio, students maintain a variety of organized and independent service events. Students operate a newspaper, television, and radio stations at Ohio University. The main newspaper, The Post, publishes in print five days a week and online all days of the week, while the university is in session and is officially independent of the university and its administration.

Freshmen at Ohio University (OU) in Athens can also ease into their college experience through learning communities, or LCs. These clusters of students take courses together and might live together, too. Students can also check out extracurricular activities, including nearly 500 clubs and organizations. With more than 30 fraternities and sororities, Greek life options abound, and about 10 percent of the student body opts to participate.

Accommodation

Ohio University students must live on campus until they have completed four semesters. Students who commute from a parent’s home within 50 miles of campus are exempt from the housing requirement, as are students who meet other exemption criteria.

The university offers residence halls in its 3 districts: East, West and South Greens. The majority of 38 halls are traditional-style residence halls with shared community bathrooms. Some of the halls have their own laundry facilities.

Career services

There are Student Success Center and Career Development Center at Ohio University that help students in their career paths. Career Center is responsible for organizing career and leadership coaching, mock interviews, leadership development classes, and other career events.
