Fudan University

Fudan University was established in 1905, initially named Fudan Public School. The name "Fudan" originated from a famous statement, meaning unremitting effort. 

Today, Fudan has a 32,000-strong student population with international students comprising around 15% of all undergraduates.

The university offers 70 undergraduate degree programs across the arts, humanities and sciences, and prides itself on having an international outlook. A number of its courses are taught in English and the institution boasts global connections and exchange programs with almost 200 overseas universities. 

The university takes a liberal arts approach to education, with an ethos based on the belief that academic study is most effective when combined with individual development of character, an understanding of different cultures and a teaching of independent research methods. To meet these ends, Fudan adopts an innovative teaching approach combining ideology and culture in lectures and conferences – many of which are broadcast publicly on the internet.

A strong emphasis is also placed on practical training, and the university has a number of initiatives in place to assist students with their own projects, including the university’s undergraduate academic research financial aid platform which assists 500 students each year with funding their own independent academic research. Fudan's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (FDUROP) also gives students the facilities to showcase their ideas.

Fudan also actively incubates high-tech industries and encourages them to convert knowledge to power. Years of learning and discovering have yielded great benefits as well as profits. In return, the multi-pattern development of the high-tech industries helps the University with breathtaking efficiency to industrialize the research outcomes. Meanwhile, a group of University-sponsored enterprises is emerging, filled with passion and ambition. Fudan has thus created its signature style of doing business.

Fudan University's undergraduate program is extremely selective. Fudan is one of the five universities in China whose undergraduate programs are the hardest for students to get in.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-2017 placed Fudan 155th in the world. The QS World University Rankings 2015-2016 considered it 43st worldwide while it was 11th in the independent regional QS Asian University Rankings (2016) and 3rd in QS BRICS University Rankings (2016), respectively.

There are 15 English-taught master degree programs at Fudan, including Chinese Politics and Diplomacy and Chinese Economy. There is also an English-taught bachelor degree program for clinical medicine.
