Fordham University

Overview

Founded in 1841, Fordham is a world-renowned Jesuit, Catholic university with two campuses in New York City. Its global and diverse community is steeped in the nearly 500-year history of the Jesuits, a religious order with an international reputation as intellectuals and professional educators. The Jesuit tradition emphasizes academic excellence, care for the whole person and social justice. The university welcomes people of all faiths and of no faith, students who want to be men and women for others, to use their education to serve the common good.

Fordham's academic ideals are drawn from its Jesuit influences. The university promotes the Jesuit principles of fostering a faculty and administrative respect for the individual student and all of his or her gifts and abilities; encouraging students to challenge themselves and strive for excellence in their lives.

Ten different colleges make up Fordham University – four of which are for undergraduates while six are for postgraduates. These include: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees, as well as the various master's and doctoral degrees. The university, however, is most renowned for its humanities programs.  Among Fordham’s graduate degrees is the Fordham School of Law, which is in fact home to the first Fashion Law Institute in the country.

Fordham University is considered a research university and facilities are available on campus to facilitate this. Buildings include the Louis Calder Centre – a 114-acre biological field station – the William Spain Seismic Observatory, and a data collection unit for the US Geological Survey. Many faculty of Fordham have conducted research with other institutions across the country such as the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre. The libraries at Fordham University are huge, containing more than two million volumes, periodicals and electronic journals. Moreover, it is also a depository for United States Government documents.

The 2017 edition of U.S. News & World Report lists Fordham as a "more selective" national university and ranks it tied for the 60th in this category. Forbes America's Top Colleges 2016 report ranked Fordham the 145th.

Notable people who attended Fordham include Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr., an American actor, filmmaker, director, and producer,  Donald J. Trump, the President-elect of the United States of America. Business and finance magnates that have attended Fordham include Anne M. Mulcahy, retired Chairperson and CEO of Xerox and named one of the "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" in 2006 by Fortune Magazine; Rose Marie Bravo, Vice Chairman and former CEO of Burberry and named one of the "50 Most Powerful Women in Business Outside the United States" in 2004 and 2005 by Fortune Magazine.
