Duquesne University

Overview

One of the nation's top Catholic universities, Duquesne University provides a well-rounded education that will challenge students academically while nourishing their spiritual and ethical development. Founded more than 130 years ago by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, Duquesne University is the only Spiritan institution of higher education in the United States. This means DU shares in the Spiritans' values and is deeply committed to:

  • educational excellence;
  • moral and spiritual values;
  • an ecumenical atmosphere open to diversity;
  • service to the Church, the community, the nation and the world.

Today students have a selection of 80 undergraduate degree programs through the university’s nine different schools:

  • business;
  • education;
  • health sciences;
  • law;
  • liberal arts;
  • music;
  • natural & environmental sciences;
  • nursing;
  • pharmacy;
  • biomedical engineering program.

At Duquesne University students are learning from teacher-scholars who provide an excellent classroom experience and also produce some of the most important research in their fields. In fact, The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked us No. 16 among 61 small research universities that were rated according to an index measuring faculty productivity. Besides, U.S. News National University Rankings 2016 ranked DU the 124th nationally. Washington Monthly National Universities Rankings 2016 placed it the 128th.

The 49-acre campus is on top of a hill in Pittsburgh. Students can join any of the 150 student organizations including 19 fraternities and sororities and use two recording studios, a multipurpose recreation centre and a theater-classroom complex. Students can choose to take part in football, basketball, cross-country, soccer, swimming, tennis, outdoor and indoor track and field, lacrosse, rowing, and volleyball.

Also, the DU campus is also one of the first in Pennsylvania to invest in green technology, such as an ice cooling system that reduces peak energy demands. With an acceptance rate of about 73% Duquesne is mildly challenging to get in.

Duquesne has many notable alumni in the media and sports fields, at least two bishops and two cardinals in the Roman Catholic Church.
