University of Sheffield

Student life

Sheffield is one of the UK’s most popular places for students to go to university. The city is large enough to offer a great range of restaurants, shopping, theatre, cinemas, bars and culture; yet small enough to find your way around quickly and feel part of the community. Sheffield is the fourth largest city in England and just over two hours by train from London.

Students rate the University of Sheffield Students’ Union as the very best in the UK. With over 250 clubs and societies to choose from you’ll never be short of something to do.

Student facilities, including Library and Computing

  • Brand new £23-million Information Commons centre with 500 PCs, wireless access throughout, open 24/7.
  • 1.4 million books and journals in the University library and access to a further 10,000 e-books and e-journals.
  • 1,777 computers provided centrally in 37 locations across campus, plus 844 computers in department computer rooms.
  • Free access to the internet and email on campus, as well as off-campus access to files and email via the University portal.

Each residence offers self-catering facilities, although with so many restaurants and cafés you will have many options at mealtimes. All of the utilities (gas, electricity, water, internet) are included in the rents. As a guide rent typically ranges from £110-£170 per week. A typical room includes a bed, study desk, chair, storage facilities and the majority of the options include en-suite bathroom facilities. Kitchens are fully-equipped with a fridge, freezer, cooker and microwave.
