University of Portsmouth

Student life

The student community brings a diverse mix of people together, to study, to enjoy free use of the University facilities and to make the most of the lifestyle that Portsmouth has to offer. What’s more, so much of what you can do here also develops you for your future as a graduate. In the weeks leading up to your arrival the University gives you all the information you need for a smooth start and invites you to attend the Orientation week for international and EU students. Orientation week helps you settle in and make new friends before your course starts and continuing students return for their studies. You’ll also get a chance to get to know the people and services that can support you academically and personally through your time as a student.

In your first month as a student you might:

  • Join one of the 150 clubs and societies
  • Take part in a sports competition with your new team
  • Join our gym
  • Take up a new instrument or start learning a new language
  • Join forces with other students to raise money for charity.

So much more than just books, our library offers spacious, comfortable and well-equipped learning environments. Located at the heart of the campus it houses the largest open access computer area on campus with supportive staff to ensure you get the most out of your studies. The University also has open access computer suites all around campus with the latest equipment and excellent student support. For many of their courses you’ll be working in real-life learning environments such as a mock court room or a model pharmacy. These simulated environments demonstrate the strong professional nature of many of the courses and prepare you for successful employment.

Accommodation

The University has ten purpose built, modern and well-equipped halls of residence where you will live among other students from different courses, ages, cultures and backgrounds. All international students are guaranteed a room in University accommodation for their first year at the University provided they have completed their booking form and paid an advance rent payment by the deadline in August.

Career services

With your student visa, you can currently work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full time during university vacations. Purple Door, the University’s on campus recruitment agency, advertises a wide range of part-time employment and volunteering opportunities to fit around your studies. Purple Door also offers an extensive range of resources and support, helping you prepare for your future career.
