Overview

The University of Oklahoma (OU) is a large residential, research university located in Norman. With roots dating back to 1890, the university now offers a wealth of different subjects for students to enjoy. Its main campus is located in Norman, about 20 miles from Oklahoma City. Norman has a wide variety of neighbourhoods, with different restaurants, art galleries, while it is also home to some of the oldest buildings in Oklahoma.

The university consists of fifteen colleges, including 152 majors such as aviation, meteorology, geology, petroleum engineering, energy management, architecture, law, medicine, Native American studies, history of science, and dance programs. Students are able to achieve bachelor, masters and PhD.  UO also engaged in research activities in various different fields, although it is particularly well known for the work it has achieved in the field of meteorology.

There is also a health sciences centre based in Oklahoma City itself, as well as a secondary Health Sciences campus in Tulsa. OU is the largest research institution in the state of Oklahoma and with more than 570 endowed faculty members who are committed to providing students with a real world, hands-on learning experience, its programs continue to be ranked among the best.

With strong academic and successful athletics programs, the University of Oklahoma has seen many of its former students go on to local and national prominence. This includes many athletes that have excelled at the collegiate, professional and Olympic levels.

Notable alumni include James Garner, an actor, producer, and voice artist who starred in several television series spanning more than five decades, Fred Haise, an aeronautical engineer, former naval aviator, fighter and test pilot and NASA astronaut who is one of the only 24 people to have flown to the Moon.

Academic specialism

The most popular majors by the number of students are:

  • The College of Arts & Sciences – it enrolls 35.2% of the OU-Norman students. The College of Arts & Sciences offers several programs which include internships and most notably a joint archaeological program (with Saint Anselm College of Goffstown, New Hampshire) in Orvieto, Italy. 
  • The Price College of Business enrolls 13%. 
  • Other large colleges on the Norman campus include the College of Engineering with 10.6% and the College of Education, Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication and College of Liberal Studies, each with approximately 6% of the student body.
