University of Missouri

Student life

Established in 1999, the campus of the University of Missouri is 511 ha just south of Downtown Columbia and is maintained as a unique botanical garden with tens of thousands of plants and trees across campus. Described by the university as a “fertile academic environment”, it consists more than 40,000 plants of, many of which have been arranged in special collections.

In and among this natural environment are a number of university sites that have been listed on the national register of historic places. These include the Francis Quadrangle – or simply the Quad – which features the Jesse Hall and The Columns, and the Sanborn Field and Soil Erosion Plots.

Mizzou has more than 600 clubs and organizations for students. More than 20 percent of students join the school's Greek system, which is made up of 50-plus fraternities and sororities. MU is home to one of the oldest and largest Greek systems in the nation.

The department of student activities (DSA) provides the campus with a wide array of entertainment programs including concerts, comedy shows, movies, novelty events, lectures, cultural opportunities, and educational programs. DSA consists of six committees, each of which is focused on bringing a diverse group of events to campus: black programming, college music, films, international programming, speakers and special events.

Sports facilities on campus include a gigantic and state of the art weight room, several basketball courts, racket ball, a track, many different pools, there is even a rock wall.

The campus is basically in downtown Columbia, so there are plenty of places to dine in walking distance off campus. There is a theatre, a music lounge, and an art exhibit about a 5 minute walk off campus. The Columbia Mall is also popular to go to here. It is not very big, but there are plenty of places to shop.

Accommodation

The University of Missouri operates 23 on-campus residence halls and least two other off-campus sites. The two off-campus locations include: Tiger Diggs at Campus View Apartments and True Scholars House. Many residence halls on campus offer learning communities and freshman interest groups. Both programs seek to ensure that students succeed academically while living in the residence halls.

Career services

The MU Career Center provides resources and services to all Mizzou students. They provide assistance in finding a major, exploring career options, seeking student employment, drafting a resume or cover letter, developing job search strategies, building interview skills, and much more.

The organization helps students with exploring majors and careers, writing resumes and cover letters, preparing for interviews, organizing internships and career counselling.
