Overview

Located in the heart of downtown Denver, University of Colorado, Denver is an urban public research university that connects students with the city through hands-on learning. Founded in 1912, it is part of the University of Colorado system. 

The university has two campuses — one in downtown Denver at the Auraria Campus, and the other at the Anschutz Medical Campus located in neighboring Aurora. With about 73% acceptance rate, Denver is mildly challenging to get in.

CU Denver has eight schools and colleges, providing degrees to more than 18,000 students. As part of the state’s largest public university system, CU Denver contributes more than $700 million annually to the Colorado economy. 

The College of Architecture and Planning is the only college in Colorado to offer a full range of degrees in architecture and related disciplines, from undergraduate through professional master’s to PhD. CU Denver students benefit from academic connections with the CU Anschutz Medical Campus, located six miles east.

The university is highly ranked in the United States and worldwide. In its 2017 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, Denver was ranked the 197th. The Chronicle of Higher Education ranks the university as having the top 10 Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index in the United States in the fields of biomedical sciences, developmental biology, human and medical genetics, oncology and cancer biology, structural biology and toxicology. 

Besides, the university ranked the 5th among American medical schools for primary care in 2010, and the 27th among medical schools for research by research rankings “Best Medical Schools" U.S. News and World Report. America's Top Colleges 2016 ranks Denver the 60th in United States.

Notable alumni of the university include Rick Alden - owner and CEO Skullcandy, Insook Bhushan - olympic table tennis player, John Morse - Colorado State Senator, The Fray Don Southerton - American writer, Gloria Tanner - first African American woman Colorado state senator and many others.

Academic specialism

Students at CU Denver, as it is known, can choose from more than 130 areas of study, including master’s degrees in business, engineering and education. CU Denver has several highly ranked health programs, including nursing and physical therapy, and its School of Medicine has top-ranked programs in family medicine and pediatrics.

The most popular majors are Business Administration and Management, Nursing and Biology.

"Rankings Biological Sciences 2007" U.S. News and World Report ranked the graduate school the 68th in the biological sciences in 2010. "Rankings Nursing 2007" U.S. News and World Report 2010 ranked the School of Nursing the 15th in the nation, while among Nurse Practitioner programs the university is ranked the 8th,the 5th, and the 3rd in the areas of Adult, Family, and Pediatric respectively by "Best Health Schools" U.S. News and World Report.

Location

CU Denver, part of the Auraria Campus, is located to the southwest of downtown Denver in the Auraria Neighborhood, on Speer Boulevard and Auraria Parkway. 

CU Denver shares the Auraria Campus with two additional institutes of higher education, making this campus one-of-a-kind: Metropolitan State University of Denver and the Community College of Denver. 

Regional Transportation District's (RTD) Light Rail has two stops on the Auraria Campus: Colfax at Auraria and Auraria West Campus.
