Overview

The University of Cincinnati (UC) traces its origins to 1819, the year in which Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio were chartered. In 1870, the City of Cincinnati established the University of Cincinnati which later absorbed the earlier institutions. In 1906, the University of Cincinnati created the first cooperative education program in the United States through its College of Engineering. 

For many years the University of Cincinnati was the second oldest and second largest municipal university in the country. The University of Cincinnati is classified as a Research Extensive University by the Carnegie Commission and is ranked by the National Science Foundation among the top 25 public research universities in the United States. UC boasts a faculty who have distinguished themselves worldwide for creative teaching and research.

As its name suggests it is located in Cincinnati, Ohio and is the region’s largest employer. Since its formation the university has been the birthplace of numerous groundbreaking discoveries, such as the first cooperative education programme in the world. Notable inventions and discoveries accredited to UC researchers include the world's first electronic organ, the antihistamine, the heart-lung machine and the oral polio vaccine.

Today UC has an enrolment of over 44,000 students and offers over 300 programs of study. It also provides International Programs which gives students the opportunity to study abroad.

The University has been described by US News as one of 15 “up and coming” universities and is referred to as one of the world’s most beautiful campuses by Forbes Magazine. It has also been labelled a “green school” by Princeton Review.

Being a home to many impressive facilities such as a 200,000 square-foot recreation center UC is also known for its commitment to sport and its athletics teams are known as the ‘Bearcats’ – a nickname coined during a football game in 1914.

The university has won over 40 conference championships in the Mid-American Conference, Missouri Valley Conference, Metro Conference, Conference USA, and the Big East Conference and is a member of the American Athletic Conference now .

Its alumni includes the astronaut Neil Armstrong, US Vice President Charles G. Dawes and the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist, Walt Handelsman.

Beginning with the 2011 edition of the U.S. News & World Report "Best Colleges" rankings the University of Cincinnati has been ranked as a Tier 1 university, ranking as the 140th National University and the 71st Top Public University in the 2016 rankings.
