University of Arkansas

Overview

The University of Arkansas is a land and space grant university that was founded in 1871 Arkansas Industrial University, with just eight students and three faculty members. Today, this public research institution attracts around 27,000 students from all 50 US states and 120 countries worldwide.

Situated on the hills in the city of Fayetteville, the university’s campus comprises 130 buildings, 11 of which have been included in the national register of historic places. 

On offer to students are 78 undergraduate degree programs, 86 master’s and 50 doctoral and specialist programs, as well as around 1,300 faculty members.

The university also has close affiliations to the Arkansas Research and Technology Park. Owned by the university, the Technology Park has helped dozens of tech start-ups develop their businesses, creating close to 350 jobs in the local economy.

William J. Fulbright, the creator of one of the largest exchanges of scholars in the world, the Fulbright Scholarship Programme, was a graduate and former president of the university. Bill and Hillary Clinton also taught law at the university at the start of their careers, where Hillary founded its first legal clinic.

The university and its several programs have been recognized on the national level. In recent years, the University of Arkansas has been recognized as a "Top-Tier National University" by College Rankings 2011, one of the "Best 371 Colleges" and "Best Southeastern College" by Princeton Review 2011 and one of the "100 Best Public College Values" by USA Today 2010.

The U.S. News National University Rankings 2016 placed U of A the 135th nationally. Academic Ranking of World Universities 2015 ranked it the 401st worldwide.

In addition to the university's recognitions, several colleges have received special distinctions. The Sam M. Walton College of Business is ranked as the 34th top public business school in the nation and is ranked the 56th amongst all public and private schools in 2011. It has also been recognized for its the 15th ranked public Marketing program, the 13th ranked public Corporate Strategy program, the 11th ranked Accounting program in its division, the 19th ranked public Supply Chain Management program, and the 39th ranked public Masters in Business Administration program by Waltoncollege Ranking 2011. 

Other highly ranked schools include the Fay Jones School of Architecture, School of Law, the Creative Writing program in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.
