University of Alabama

Overview

The University of Alabama (Alabama or UA) is a public research university located in Tuscaloosa and the flagship of the University of Alabama System. Founded in 1820, UA is the oldest and largest of the public universities in Alabama.

UA offers programs of study in 13 academic divisions leading to bachelor's, master's, Education Specialist, and PhD’s degrees. The only publicly supported law school in the state is at UA. Other academic programs unavailable elsewhere in Alabama include doctoral programs in anthropology, communication and information sciences, metallurgical engineering, music, Romance languages, and social work.

The university provides a creative, nurturing campus environment where students can become the best individuals possible, learn from the best and brightest faculty and make a positive difference in the community, the state and the world. UA’s beautiful 1,200-acre campus and state-of-the-art labs have everything for students to be successful during  their college years.

The University of Alabama's activities emerge from a broad range of research and creative theirs, many of which are recognized for their contributions to the economic, technological, and cultural growth of the State. Research and creative activity yields continuing stimulation for the instructional programs offered by the University's colleges and schools, supported by the Amelia Gorgas Library, a member of the Association of Research Libraries.

The university has a high level of research activity and has a comprehensive doctoral graduate instructional program in the liberal arts, humanities, social sciences and STEM fields, though it lacks health and veterinary sciences professional programs. As a research institution, UA offers opportunities for all students to get involved in projects. There is an annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference that showcases individual work.

The University of Alabama has consistently been ranked as one of the top 50 public universities in the nation by the U.S. News & World Report 2015. U.S. News National University Rankings 2016 placed it the  103rd nationally.

Among UA notable alumni are Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia; Margaret Conditt, Ohio State Representative and many others.
