Student life

Many of UT students are attracted to the university by its lush campus – it has more than 230 buildings set in 560 acres – as well as its close proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is about a 45-minute drive away.

UT campus has many resources to use. Newly constructed facilities meet the growing demands of research and education while stimulating local jobs and economies throughout their investment, and they also utilize the most sophisticated building systems to optimize space, energy use and security.

The University of Tennessee has over 450 registered student organizations. These groups cater to a variety of interests and provide options for those interested in service, sports, arts, social activities, government, politics, cultural issues, and Greek societies. In addition, the university operates two radio stations and a literary art magazine.

The university also offers a number of recreational sports, many offering intercollegiate play. Sports include rugby, soccer, wrestling, hockey, running, crew, golf and paintball.

Accommodation

UT housing options include apartment, suite and community style halls or living-learning communities.

Room Selection at the University of Tennessee allows incoming first year students to select their own room, providing an opportunity to choose their campus experience. Freshmen are required to live on campus.

All of these residence halls have cable TV, wireless high-speed Internet access, post offices, and washers and dryers. Plus, students can check out athletic equipment, games, cleaning supplies, and kitchen utensils to use.

The rooms are within walking distance of classrooms, facilities and labs, dining halls, convenience stores and groceries, offices, sports and entertainment venues and transportation.

Career services

The Center for Career Development provides career counseling, career exploration classes, interest and personality assessments and resources to help in choosing a major and career. It also helps identifying part-time jobs, internships and full-time positions.

Location

The University of Tennessee is located in Knoxville, the state's third largest city after Nashville and Memphis. It is based 3 hours from Atlanta to the South and from Nashville to the West. The nearest airport is 12 miles south of Knoxville.
