The University of Melbourne

Student life

The main campus is in Parkville, only a few minutes from the very centre of Melbourne. It’s a beautiful mix of historic sandstone buildings, contemporary architecture, sustainable design and stunning outdoor spaces that are a perfect place to sit and catch up on your readings.

The Southbank campus hosts the Victorian College of the Arts and part of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. It offers purpose-built teaching and performance facilities for arts training, and is centrally located within Melbourne’s cultural and arts precinct, sitting right alongside the National Gallery of Victoria and the Melbourne Theatre Company.

The life of a student at the University of Melbourne is both dynamic and rewarding. Participation and involvement outside the class room can broaden your overall education experience. The University has a unique and wide range of activities, societies and services that give our graduates a broader life education - critical to the modern workplace, and ensuring a student experience that is intellectually stimulating, and socially rewarding.

The Melbourne University Library is one of the busiest in Australia, and holds extensive collections books, DVDs, photographic slides, music scores, periodicals, children's toys and cultural collections. It operates in more than a dozen locations across several campuses. The branches see more than 1.4 million visits every year and our web sites serve more than 3 million visitors. In a single year the students, academic staff, professional staff, alumni and other Library Members complete more than 1.3 million loans and renewals.

Accommodation

The University of Melbourne has 11 residential colleges that are an ideal accommodation option if you are not from Melbourne. Living at a residential college can provide a fast way to build an academic and social network. The colleges provide sporting and cultural programs to enrich your academic experience in a thriving, warm and supportive community. All the colleges have fees but there are also accommodation scholarships available.

Around the campus are the suburbs of Parkville, Carlton, North Melbourne and Brunswick. All of them are a very short distance away by public transport. You might choose to live in one of the many "share houses" in one of these suburbs, with other students. Not only can you save money on rent and bills, you also enjoy an atmosphere of student living with like-minded people.

If you are not sure where to find accommodation, the Student Housing Service can help you find and maintain affordable, safe and appropriate housing including short-term temporary accommodation if you're arriving from interstate or overseas.
