Overview

Since its founding in 1864—just a few years after the city of Denver itself was founded— DU has played an integral role in the cultural, social, economic and educational life of the city it calls a home. The University of Denver is the oldest independent university in the Rocky Mountain region.

The University's 125-acre campus a few miles south of downtown Denver offers more than 100 undergraduate programs of study and  more than 120 graduate and professional programs. Regardless of what they study University of Denver students embark on a personal educational journey that helps them find and follow their individual purpose. 

Research led by UD faculty and students has made a tangible difference in a huge range of fields, generating new medical technologies, environmental safeguards, archaeological discoveries and much more. The Carnegie Foundation classifies DU as a research university with high research activity.

With the acceptance rate of about 77%, UD is relatively easy to get in.

Notable DU alumni include former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; a comedian David Adkins (known as Sinbad); Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, a chairman of Emirates airlines, CEO and chairman of The Emirates Group and many others.

DU is among the US top universities. The U.S. News & World Report's annual college rankings for undergraduate education released in September 2016, ranked DU the 86th, tied with Marquette University and the University of Tulsa among others. 

In their 2017 rankings, the Princeton Review rated DU among the top 20 in four categories:

Academic specialism

The most popular majors by the number of registered students are finance, psychology, international relations and affairs, communications, biology, marketing, business.

Female students can opt to enroll in the school's Women's College which offers single-sex classes and organizations. Female students in the Women's College graduate with a DU degree. DU is also home to the Sturm College of Law, which ranks in the first tier of law schools.
