North Carolina State University

Overview

North Carolina State University, NCSU is a part of the University of North Carolina system. It forms one of the corners of the Research Triangle together with Duke University in Durham and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The North Carolina General Assembly founded NC State in 1887 as a land-grant college under the name "North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts." In the segregated system, it was open only to white students. As a land-grant college, NC State provided a liberal and practical education while focusing on military tactics, agriculture and the mechanical arts without excluding classical studies. Since its founding, the university has maintained these objectives while building on them.

Today the university is a pre-eminent research enterprise that excels in science, technology, engineering, math, design, the humanities and social sciences, textiles and veterinary medicine.

NC State students, faculty and staff take problems in hand and work with industry, government and nonprofit partners to solve them. Students apply what they learn by conducting research, working in internships and co-ops and performing acts of world-changing service. That experiential education ensures they leave ready to lead the workforce, confident in the knowledge that NC State consistently rates as one of the best vatts to curb nuclear proliferation, develop a smart electric grid, create self-powered health monitors, help farmers confront climate change and build a new American manufacturing sector. Its award-winning Centennial Campus is home to more than 70 public and private partners — as well as the innovative Hunt Library, which Time magazine has dubbed “the library of the future.”

U.S. News & World Report ranks NC State tied for the 89th out of all national universities and the 37th out of public universities in the U.S. and the 50th for "best value" schools. The Academic Ranking of World Universities positions NC State in the 201-300 range among 500 the best world universities in 2016 and the 32nd best university worldwide for Engineering in 2015.

Kiplinger's Personal Finance placed NC State the 11th in 2016 ranking of best value public colleges in the United States and the U.S. News & World Report ranked it the 50th of "best value" schools.

In 2016, the U.S. News & World Report ranked NC State's Nuclear Engineering program tied for the 8th in the nation and its Biological & Agricultural Engineering program tied for 9th. Additionally, the U.S. News & World Report ranked NC State's Veterinary program 3rd nationally.
