Student life

EMU campus is a culturally diverse learning and teaching community set in a small city environment, amid a major metropolitan area. Students, attracted by its atmosphere and location, come not only from the Metro Detroit area but also from the entire state of Michigan and even from other countries. EMU is well known both nationally and internationally. 

The university's site is composed of an academic and athletic campus spread across 3.2 km2, with 122 buildings. The EMU campus includes several buildings with sculpture by Corrado Parducci, a famous Italian-American architectural sculptor. 

Living on-campus offers student-centered learning, development and involvement activities that challenge and support the unique gifts, needs, experiences and interests of EMU students, professional staff members and members of the broader campus community.

Besides, Eastern Michigan University offers a number of student services, including nonremedial tutoring, women's center, placement service, day care, health service. Eastern Michigan University also offers campus safety and security services like 24-hour foot and vehicle patrols, late night transport/escort service, 24-hour emergency telephones, lighted pathways/sidewalks, student patrols, controlled dormitory access (key, security card, etc.).

EMU students can join more than 250 campus organizations, pledge with about 25 fraternities and sororities, and take a break from it all at the Starbucks café in the student center. Student athletes can play sports at the intramural, club, or varsity level.

Most academic departments on campus have at least one student organization for students who are interested in that subject area. Students work with volunteer organizations such as Habitat for Humanity both during the school year and on breaks. Other clubs include the Muslim Student Association, the LGBTA and many others, so there is a wide range of clubs. 

Beyond student organizations, EMU offers a variety of Greek organizations on campus. The Greek system provides fraternities and sororities that students can join, many of which have houses within walking distance of campus.

Just like many large universities, EMU has many student-oriented facilities outside the classroom. The university has plays, musicals, student organizations, and various social activities for students. On-campus hangouts include the Student Center, recreation and sports facilities, Halle Library, and dining facilities like. EMU's office of Campus Life provides many co-curricular opportunities for both resident students and commuter students, which include Friday night movies, Laugh Lounge and Sky Lounge. In addition to activities on campus, EMU's campus life office also organizes occasional "Eastern Excursions" to cities such as Detroit, Cleveland, and Chicago. Off-campus hangouts include Depot Town, Frog Island, Riverside Park, downtown Ann Arbor and The Ugly Mug coffee shop.

Accommodation

Living on campus is the best way to make the most of student’s experience at EMU. Housing & Residence Life Center provides a welcoming student-centered environment that will be supportive and provide every student with necessary tools needed for the future.

All 10 residence halls are conveniently located near academic buildings and dining venues to encourage social interaction, networking, and community involvement. Residence halls have access to high-speed Internet. Note that all new incoming freshmen students are required to live on campus unless they are commuting from the parent's permanent home address and is within a 50-mile radius.

One of the wonderful opportunities is that students are allowed to bring their cats in the apartments.

In general, EMU on-campus accommodation system is wide and it offers coed housing, apartments for married/single students, fraternity/sorority housing, special housing for disabled students, special housing for international students and theme housing. EMU also has numerous dining and satellite operations. 

Career services

The university assists and advises international students and scholars in their unique educational and personal career goals. 

The University Advising and Career Development Center (UACDC) offers many tools and services to assist students in developing academic and career goals and/or deciding on a major or minor. The core areas of the UACDC include:

general education academic advising, 

career coaching/strategizing, 

student employment. 

UACDC also offers great online resources and in-person career advising to help students learn all about how to find a job and how to prepare yourself for a job search. Each year the UACDC hosts a variety of job fairs, workshops and special events to assist students in their career planning and job search.

In average, about 84% of EMU students feel confident they will find a job in their field after graduation.

Location

The wooded EMU campus is located in historic city of Ypsilanti, 56 km west of Detroit and 13 km east of Ann Arbor. Detroit Metro Airport is a fifteen-minute drive from campus. Along with some impressive examples of Victorian architecture, the area has numerous bars, restaurants and a farmers market.
