Brigham Young University


Brigham Young University (BYU) is a private research university located in Provo, Utah. This institution that is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and home to more than 32,000 students.

Founded in 1875, the institution operated as an academy for several decades until 1903 when Brigham Young University and Brigham Young High School were established in place of the dissolved Brigham Young Academy.

BYU offers degree courses in a vast number of study fields at both graduate and undergraduate level. Student teams won both the 2007 and 2008 L’Oréal National Brandstorm Competition, and the Adobe Photoshop ‘Magnetic Lasso’ algorithm was developed at BYU.

Brigham Young University seeks to develop students of faith, intellect and character who have the skills and the desire to continue learning and to serve others throughout their lives. Known for its academically minded and internationally experienced student body, world-class teaching and  beautiful mountain location, BYU is also recognized for its extensive language programs, talented performing arts ensembles, outstanding sports programs and devotion to combining solid scholarship with the principles of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Every Sunday BYU conducts church services for students, although attendance is often so high that students regularly opt to go to off-campus services in the city of Provo.

The university sports teams, known as the Cougars, compete is a range of sports and the BYU basketball team has included standout players such as Jimmer Fredette, 2011 NCAA basketball player of the year, and Tyler Haws, who scored the most points in the nation in the 2014-15 season.

BYU is highly ranked. U.S. News National University Rankings 2016 placed it the 68th nationally. Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2016 placed the university the 401st worldwide. For 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked BYU as tied for the 68th among national universities in the United States.

Among notable alumni who graduated BYU are american businessman and politician, former governor of Massachusetts - Mitt Romney, young adult fiction writer and film producer - Stephenie Meyer, manager for Imagine Dragons - Matthew Reynolds.

Academic specialism

BYU offers a variety of academic programs including liberal arts, engineering, agriculture, management, physical and mathematical sciences, nursing, and law. The university is broadly organized into 11 colleges or schools at its main Provo campus, with certain colleges and divisions defining their own admission standards.

The most popular majors by the number of registered students are biology, business/marketing, health professions, education, social sciences, engineering, exercise physiology, psychology, english language and literature.

In 2009 the university's Marriott School of Management received a No. 5 ranking by BusinessWeek for its undergraduate programs, and its MBA program was ranked by several sources: No. 22 ranking by BusinessWeek, No. 16 by Forbes, and No. 29 by U.S. News & World Report.

Among regional schools the MBA program was ranked No. 1 by The Wall Street Journal's ranking 2007, and No. 92 among business schools worldwide in 2009 by Financial Times. For 2009, the university's School of Accountancy, which is housed within the Marriott School, received two No. 3 rankings for its undergraduate program — one by Public Accounting Report and the other by U.S. News & World Report.
