Adelphi University

Overview

Adelphi is a place of opportunity where students gain the skills, knowledge and exposure to thrive as professionals and active citizens in an interconnected and fast-paced global society. Adelphi prides itself on a distinguished 120-year history.

Adelphi has a long and impressive history of preparing students of all backgrounds through exceptional liberal arts and sciences education and professional training. This private university, the oldest institute for higher learning on Long Island, NY, was originally founded as a boys' preparatory school in 1863. It became coeducational in 1896 and now offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, post-doctoral study, and adult education programs through its main Garden City campus and at satellite campuses in Manhattan, Hauppauge, and Hudson Valley.

Adelphi strives to foster in its students a passion for knowledge and lifelong learning, a questioning of cultural values, and a desire to contribute their knowledge and service to the community at large.

With one of the lowest tuitions among the 19 private colleges and universities on Long Island, Adelphi has been named a Best Buy by the Fiske Guide to Colleges for eight consecutive years. A low student-to-faculty ratio (10:1) enables Adelphi to carry out its commitment to personalized education. And Adelphi’s graduation rates — the highest of any comprehensive private college in the Long Island region — are proof of the effectiveness of its approach.

Its eight colleges offer programs in business, nursing, and education and a Bridges to Adelphi program for students with nonverbal and neuro-social disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder. The college also emphasizes integrated learning opportunities, including those offered in the new Alice Brown Early Learning Center. It serves as both an experiential learning environment for children and a contemporary laboratory for students.

Adelphi University has been nationally recognized and cited by several well-respected organizations and publications such as The Princeton Review, U.S. News and World Report, Fiske Guide to Colleges and Forbes as a top choice for a quality education.

Adelphi was also recognized in the report’s first-ever list of colleges in its National Universities ranking category that are overperforming in ensuring student success. In November 2012, Adelphi was ranked as a Top 15 Overperformer in undergraduate academic reputation.

2016 Forbes ranking placed Adelphi 155th in Research Universities in the United States.
