Year 1: Modules cover the breadth of geography and are common to BSc and BA students; they include: principles of physical geography; environment; nature and society; and human worlds of difference; approaches to university study and transferable skills are developed in skills for professional geographers while working with geographical information introduces students to geographical data analysis. Year 2: students take modules which are primarily grounded in physical geography, combining core modules with free choice modules which make up pathways of specialisation in particular areas; core modules include: geographical data analysis; techniques in environmental analysis; research design and planning and the physical geography field course (South East Spain), which prepare students for their final year research project, the fieldwork for which is usually executed over the summer; there are 5 physical geography pathways: the digital planet (geographical information systems, remote sensing); landforms and landscapes (geomorphology A and B); past environments (quaternary A and B); the green earth (biogeography A and B); environment (environmental issues). Year 3: students to use the concepts and general areas of geography covered in year 2 and apply them critically to current issues within each pathway; students also submit a dissertation which is an individual research project based on any area of physical geography; pathways and modules: the digital planet (geographical information systems applications, remote sensing); landforms and landscapes (Californian drylands field course or geomorphology of desert landforms); past environments (palaeoenvironments, global cycles: past and present); the green earth (Amazon rainforest field course; neotropical environments practical); environment (ecological futures, global environmental change); optional field courses in the final year include Californian drylands and the Amazon rainforest.
