Why study these programmes?

All full-time courses are accredited by the University of Glasgow. Christie’s Education and the University of Glasgow have been associated with each other for over twenty years. The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451 and is one of the oldest universities in the UK. The History of Art Department has been ranked top in the UK for world leading research in art history by the UK Government (RAE, 2008). We share the same commitment in providing the highest quality education in art history and we are proud of the close links between our institutions. All the lecturers in London are recognised teachers of the University.

In London we offer the Master’s togehter (MLitt)  with Christie's Education. The MLitt is a full calendar year degree programme and is recommended for those with a B.A. (Hons) or M.A. (Hons) in art history or another field related to the programme discipline, or those with related experience who wish to take their art history education to the next level. MLitt students must complete a thesis in the final term.

You will select one of four options when you apply for the MLitt programmes:

1. Art and Architecture from Antiquity to the Middle Ages and Renaissance
You will have the opportunity to study Greek and Roman art, Byzantine Art, Romanesque and Gothic Art in all media, first-hand, including architecture up to and including the Renaissance. During this programme you have the opportunity to handle works of art, to be introduced to museum and auction house systems of classification and study different models of museum display.

2. Fine and Decorative Art from the Renaissance to Modernism
You will study Fine and Decorative Art and its architectural contexts in the Renaissance, Mannerist, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical periods culminating in the great artistic movements of the 19th and 20th century. You will also explore the settings for works of art in country houses, museums and galleries learning how to evaluate works of art at first-hand using professional systems for cataloguing and artefact analysis.

3. Modern and Contemporary Art

You will study contemporary art through curatorial, theoretical and practical techniques which will place you at the centre of today’s commercial art world. Classes and visits are regularly led by visiting professionals including practising artists, gallerists, conservators, curators and critics.

4. Arts of China
You will study all aspects of Chinese art from its origins to the present day using practical hands-on approach to learning informed by contemporary techniques of curating and display. Crucially, this programme engages with Chinese art-world practice and the curators, artists, dealers and others who shape the field.

Location

Scotland's biggest city, Glasgow hosts the largest student population in Scotland and has been named one of the world's top ten cities in travel guides. Combining a compact campus-style environment with the benefits of being in a major city, the University has two main city campuses: Gilmorehill in the cosmopolitan and friendly West End; and Garscube, 6.5 km (4 miles) from the city. A third campus is located in Dumfries some 145 km to the south of Glasgow. Both city campuses have excellent transport into the city centre via frequent buses and subway. Glasgow International Airport, Glasgow Prestwick International Airport and two city centre rail terminals offer easy connections with the rest of the UK and the world.
