University of Dundee, BSc (Hons), Interactive Media Design
This course brings together 3 closely related threads running throughout all 4 levels: computing, design, and interactive media design (IMD) studies; studio-based work forms the heart of students’ experience, giving them the opportunity to develop their interests, skills and experience in a supportive environment; projects assist students in developing a wide range of transferable skills in team working, presentations and project management. Level 1: Introduces students to the range of technologies, theories and practices they encounter as interactive media designers; projects include making short videos, animated films and websites; they explore a range of computing platforms and develop their ability to express themselves visually in a range of media; semester 1 covers: software development; visual expression 1A; introduction to interactive media; semester 2 covers: information technology for computing; visual expression 1B; screen based interactive media 1. Level 2: encourages students to deepen their thinking about the future exploitation of digital technologies; they explore new theories and developments in contemporary interactive media, design; students develop a deeper understanding of managing the design process; they also extend their creative thinking to designing interactions with physical objects and develop key software engineering skills; semester 1 covers: information technology for computing 2A; design studies: contexts and stakeholders; screen based interactive media 2; semester 2 covers: information technology for computing 2B; design studies: structuring creativity; interactive space design. Level 3: builds on students’ work with physical interactions by providing them with an opportunity to work on interactive environments; students also engage with the challenge of writing stories for interactive narratives and future entertainment systems; in computing they explore object-oriented analysis and human-computer interaction; students also explore contemporary media theory as part of their design studies; semester 1 covers: object oriented analysis and design; contemporary media theory; interactive product design; semester 2 covers: human computer interaction; contemporary media theory; interactive entertainment experience design. Level 4: is devoted largely to students’ own personal integrated project and culminates in their participation in the Duncan of Jordanstone Annual Degree Show Exhibition; aside from this students are offered a choice of electives from contemporary media theory, computing and business studies; semester 1 covers: electives (from business, computing, contemporary media theory); major personal integrated projects; semester 2 covers: major personal integrated projects.
