University of Derby, BSc (Hons), Sound, Light and Live Event Technology
Year 1: students develop an understanding of electronics, computing, sound and lighting technology and performance space; students study the following modules: lighting technology; quantitative methods; live performance space; analogue and digital electronics; electrical principles and measurement; sound technology; information technology and electronic computer-aided design; study skills and continuing professional development. Year 2: students look at the application and analysis of sound and lighting systems and live event technology; they cover engineering principles and product design and get an introduction to music business and management; core modules: products and their design; electronic communication technology; live event techniques; music business and management; lighting equipment design and applications; sound reinforcement systems; students choose 3 of these modules: audio system technology; event design and technology; C/C++ programming; microprocessor systems; electronic systems; power electronics and applications; industrial placement. Year 3: students design, evaluate and assess technical systems, working individually or as a team; a major part of the year is the project and the live performance system applications module, which gives students experience of the design and operation of sound and lighting systems through live productions and scenarios; core modules: independent project (double); students choose 6 of these modules: live performance systems applications (double); multichannel sound system design; acoustics; electromagnetic compatibility entertainment industry; professional practice; electrical drives; embedded systems; digital signal processing theory; real time audio DSP; auditoria design and technology; analogue audio system design.
