Students typically follow 2 strands: media writing, which involves screenwriting and development and pitching; media production, which involves documentary production techniques and drama production techniques; students develop their skills systematically through the course; essential skills and techniques are established in the 1st year, and these are applied to specific genres of media writing (screenwriting) and drama and documentary exercises in the 2nd year; in the 3rd year, a major individual project in screenwriting or a group project in video production is supported by a professional skills programme. Year 1: Modules typically include: Researching story; video production: process; video production: structure; studying media and culture; Hollywood movies; consumption and gender and everyday life; fantasy and desire and sexuality; researching media and children. Year 2: modules typically include: writing the short film; screenwriting; investigating drama production; investigating documentary production; marketing and advertising; European media and culture; sport, media and everyday life; pop music; British film; film and television adaptations; learning for work; magazines; science and fiction. Year 3: major project: screenwriting; major project: video production; industry, employment and professional practice 2; post-modern media and culture; independent project (media studies joints); men, women and movies; comedy; horror cinema; body matters; celebrity culture; world cinema; shocking texts.
