Liverpool John Moores University, BA (Hons), Outdoor Education with Adventure Tourism
A wide range of modules are offered and each is structured in such a way so as to ensure the student develops their understanding of the key issues in outdoor education and adventure tourism; at each level the student is required to complete 120 credits, made up of a certain number of core modules, and a number of optional modules at levels 2 and 3. Level 1: At this level the student is required to complete all of the following core modules: introduction to outdoor pursuits; foundations of outdoor education; information and communication technology in geography, outdoor and environmental education; ecological processes and biogeography; outdoor pursuits leadership 1: psychology and practice; geographical basis of outdoor education. Level 2: at this level the student is required to complete all of the following core modules: advanced outdoor pursuits; perspectives in nature education; human geography of upland landscapes; research methods; adventure recreation in the winter environment; earth surface processes; caving & karst landscapes; tourism, leisure, society, culture and politics. Level 3: at this level the student is required to complete all of the following core modules: outdoor education placement; radical perspectives in outdoor and environmental education; development training; dissertation; recreational ecology and adventure tourism; sustainable and ethical tourism; the student also chooses 2 optional modules from the following: environmental issues and change; outdoor pursuits leadership 2; glacial and fluvial processes; adventure therapy. Governing Body of Sport Awards: the following Awards are addressed during the course: Mountain Leader Training (England) Summer Mountain Leader Award: the University is an approved Mountain Leader Training (England) course provider; the student undertakes a 6-day mountain walking course in outdoor pursuits leadership 1 in level 1 semester 2 (usually in North Wales); students who have registered with the scheme and logged a minimum of 20 quality mountain days by November of level 1 can undertake the approved Mountain Leader Training (England) Summer Mountain Leader training course, while those who have less experience follow a similar 6-day mountain skills course; there is the option of Summer Mountain Leader Assessment (by outside assessors) in level 3 as part of outdoor pursuits assessment 2; an additional fee is payable for Governing Body Award assessments; Rescue & Emergency Care Level 2 First Aid: the training and assessment for this takes place at level 2 (semester 2) as part of advanced outdoor pursuits 1; this means that graduates who pass first aid have a valid certificate for 3 years; British Canoe Union (BCU) Star Tests and Coaching Awards: basic kayaking skills up to British Canoe Union (BCU) 3 star standard are taught as part of introduction to outdoor pursuits and further developed in terms of the British Canoe Union coaching scheme in outdoor pursuits leadership 1 (Star Test and Kayak Safety Test Assessments) at level 1; opportunities for assessment in coaching awards (by outside assessors) can be arranged both inside and outside the course, depending on individual requirements; an additional fee is payable; Mountain Leader Training (England) Single Pitch Rock Climbing Award: the basic syllabus for this award is covered in the 2 modules at level 1: introduction to outdoor pursuits and outdoor pursuits leadership 1; students wishing to undertake the Mountain Leader Training (England) Single Pitch Rock training or assessment courses can arrange this either within or outside the course time; skills are further developed in advanced outdoor pursuits 1 and opportunities for assessment by outside assessors can be arranged later in the course (e.g. at level 3, as part of outdoor pursuits assessment 2); Local Cave Leader's (LCL) Award: for students with sufficient caving experience the training for level 1 of this award is undertaken as part of the course at level 2 in caving & karst landscapes; assessment for students with sufficient experience in their logbook can be arranged outside the course; British Orienteering Federation (BOF) Awards: orienteering is taught as part of introduction to outdoor pursuits at level 1 and there are options to undertake the British Orienteering Coaching Awards within advanced outdoor pursuits 1 and level 2; John Muir Award: this option is delivered in Snowdonia as part of introduction to outdoor pursuits at level 1 and can be taken further as an option in advanced outdoor pursuits 1 at level 2.
