Session 1: Is an introduction to the course; it enables students to identify personal and professional goals for the course, and to consider the student's support needs; students also identify their peer mentor; session 2: introduces the theory and practice of mentoring within the context of learning and guidance, and examines the workplace and community context for mentoring; session 3: begins with an introduction to the different functions and models of mentoring and coaching; students also review suitable strategies for creating a climate conducive to learning and development; session 4: explores the mentoring process; this is followed by the introduction of a range of models of mentoring with a discussion as to how they relate to students' professional practice; session 5: examines the differences between coaching and mentoring and compares the methods and skills required for each activity; session 6: considers some of the main ethical and equal opportunities issues in respect of mentoring, including principles relating to learner's rights and how these relate to students' professional practice; it reviews and evaluates how students can use and extend the skills acquired during the course to aid their own personal and professional development.
