UNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry

Overview

The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) is an American, specialized, doctoral-granting institution based in Syracuse, New York. It is immediately adjacent to Syracuse University, within which it was founded, and with whom it maintains a special relationship. In addition, ESF is a part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system.

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry is located in the University Hill section of Syracuse, an area with plentiful cultural and civic opportunities.

ESF is considered by Peterson's to be the premier college in the U.S. for the study of environmental and natural sciences, design, engineering, policy and management of natural resources and the environment in 2015. The college has expanded its initial emphasis on forestry to include professional education in environmental science, landscape architecture, environmental studies and engineering in addition to distinguished programs in the biological and physical sciences.

ESF is the oldest college in the nation devoted exclusively to study related to the wise use and replenishment of natural resources. For students interested in science, design, engineering, policy and the management of natural resources, ESF is the only place in New York, and one of the very few in the U.S., able to provide the combination of classes, field and research experiences necessary for success.

The College’s long-standing partnership with Syracuse University provides ESF students with the opportunity to take classes at SU, use library, computing, recreation and health facilities, and join student clubs and organizations. The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry offers students a niche education with the benefits of life at a large institution.

US News & World Report ranks ESF among the "Top 50 Public National Universities" and is #25 of all national universities in the "Great Schools at Great Prices" category 2016. Forbes magazine ranks ESF #23 in its list of "Best College Buys".

ESF is consistently ranked among the nation’s top universities based on value, class size and student engagement in learning. 2017 US News & World Report rankings of the top public national universities placed ESF at the 43rd position.
