To enrol at Italian universities, it is necessary to hold a secondary school leaving diploma, which is usually awarded after passing the secondary school state examination. The qualification is formally called 'Diploma di Esame di Stato conclusivo dei corsi di istruzione secondaria superiore' and it is more commonly known as 'Maturità'.
