Pavia offers a calm, captivating and cooperative environment with a higher quality of life. It also has a series of sports centres available for students to use, including those run by CUS (Centre for University Sports). Pavia is a place for students to call home. Founded in Roman times, Pavia population today is made up of approximately 70,000 inhabitants and 24,000 students. It was the Longobard capital for two centuries and its fascination remains intact with the centre’s maze of narrow streets, ancient churches and elegant buildings all bordered by the River Ticino.
Each of Pavia’s 20 colleges, that, in total, host approximately 2,000 students, has its own particular history. Colleges range from the two oldest institutions, Borromeo and Ghislieri, founded at the end of the 16th century, to the more recent ones managed by the Ente per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario (EDiSU). College life is not only study but also an opportunity to acquire a sense of belonging to an open community, one where academic achievements, traditional events, parties and sporting rivalries play a key role. Moreover, in the colleges students can build their first professional network.
The University has 9 libraries to serve its various faculties. In addition, there are also museums, research centres and the newPavia Digital Archive (PAD) dedicated to digital records of contemporary authors. In total, there are 130 libraries in the local network, 1,500,000 documents (ranging from books, videos, theses, music and printed maps to electronic documents).
