Overview

Established in 2005, University of California, Merced (UCMERCED) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the suburban setting of the large town of Merced, California. 

UC Merced was open at Sept. 5, 2005, as the newest campus in the University of California - a large  institution that also has branch campuses in Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz. Officially accredited and recognized by the WASC Senior College and University Commission, University of California, Merced is a small coeducational higher education institution. 

University of California, Merced offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, and PhD degrees in several areas of study. The university has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. 

UC Merced has 3 schools offering 21 undergraduate majors and 22 minors:

  • School of Engineering;
  • School of Natural Sciences;
  • School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts.

The School of Medicine and School of Management are planned to be integrated on campus. With acceptance rate of about 67% the university is slightly challenging to get in.

Just like at other UC campuses, academic research is a critical part of UC Merced's mission. The process of discovery provides its students with a deeper understanding of the world and its cultural, social, natural and engineered systems, but more, it solves issues and challenges that are critical to the growth, health and overall well-being of the region and whole the world. 

The researchers are conducting groundbreaking work in diabetes, cancer, bacterial diseases, antibiotic resistance, solar energy, climate change, water quality and availability, ecology, engineering, archeology, cultures, history, political science, computer science and much, much more.

UCMERCED also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sport facilities and activities, financial aids, scholarships, study abroad and exchange programs, as well as administrative services.

The 2017 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities placed University of California—Merced the 152nd nationally.
