University of Cadiz - UCA

Overview

With the constitution of its first Senate, the 30th of October 1979 marks the birth of the University of Cadiz (UCA), and so reaching the climax of a long process of reclamation of a university institution that would recuperate, for Cadiz and its province, the fruitful tradition of superior studies initiated and developed with the support of maritime and commercial activities in modern and contemporary times.

The historical background of superior studies in Cadiz go back to the XV century, with the creation of the College of the Pilots of the Sea of the East and West, under the brotherhood of the Vizcainos, whose studies of cosmography and mathematics achieved fame and prestige, as was certified by the Brief Treaty of the Sphere and art of Navigation, of Martin Cortes, formed in 1545 in Seville, and the Geometric Analysis of Antonio Hugo of Omerique – born in 1698- as an expression of the Nautical Chair that since 1682 existed in the College of Santiago of the Company of Jesus, founded in 1566.

Location

South of the Iberian Peninsula and southwest of Andalusia, one finds the province of Cadiz, the southernmost of the Spanish peninsular territories, separated by only 14 kilometres from the African continent, by the Strait of Gibraltar. The history of the province of Cadiz is marked by the legacy of the diverse cultures that have passed through it: Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs...

It is a unique province for the characteristics of its districts and for the population distribution around large urban centres. The University of Cadiz is strongly linked to the territory in which develops its activity. For this it is divided into 4 campuses with a total of 64 degrees.

One Campus is located in the old city, alongside the Genovese Park and the Caleta beach, in a set of narrow streets, little squares and charming places. The city communicates with the rest of the university campuses by regular buses liner and through the new railway station.

Due to its privileged geographical position (is the southernmost city in Europe) it enjoys a climate with an average annual temperature of 18.1 ° C, which makes it ideal to stroll around its parks and beaches. Amongst its feasts, Carnival is one of most celebrated, a festival which has been documented since the 17th century.
