Sun Yat-sen University

Sun Yat-sen University, originally known as Guangdong University, was founded in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen (also called Sun Zhongshan), a great democratic revolutionary leader of the 20th century. With an educational tradition spanning over 100 years, it is a preeminent research, academic and cultural center and the premier location for talent development in South China. 

Under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and strongly supported by both the Ministry and Guangdong Province, Sun Yat-sen University has developed into a modern comprehensive university that enjoys a reputation as a top-tier university nationally and a renowned university internationally. With five campuses in the three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, and ten affiliated hospitals, the University is striving to become a world-class university and global center of learning.

Built on a solid multidisciplinary foundation of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medical sciences, and engineering, Sun Yat-sen University is propelled forward by the continuous pursuit of academic innovation. Sun Yat-sen University offers outstanding disciplinary influence. Eighteen disciplines at SYSU rank among the world’s top one percent according to ESI 2016, tied for second place among mainland Chinese universities; among these disciplines, eleven rank in the world’s top 0.5 percent, and two rank in the world’s top 0.1 percent.

The university is a national leader in international cooperation and exchange: SYSU has established over 230 collaborative programs with partners in more than 30 countries and regions around the world, including joint platforms and institutes with universities such as FINUCI in France, and Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

The university is ranked as one of the top universities in China by all the most influential and widely observed international university rankings, for example, #7 nationwide in Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015, #6 nationwide in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2015, and #8 nationwide in U.S. News Global University Ranking 2015.

The most highly ranked programs are management program, business, and medical sciences.

The university has featured programs taught in English that include IMBA, MBBS, and Tourism Management.
