Stevens Institute of Technology

Overview

Incorporated in 1870, Stevens Institute of Technology, SIT, is one of the oldest technological universities in the United States and historically the first college in America solely dedicated to mechanical engineering.

SIT is a private co-educational research institution. It was created by act of the New Jersey legislature in 1870. The school ranks in the top five percent among the nation's technological universities as it continues to educate future leaders and innovators. Each of its undergraduate program follows a broad-based course curriculum taught by distinguished faculty. The 9:1 student-faculty ratio enables personal attention and growth. Students can combine their classroom and laboratory experience with cooperative education, internships or research opportunities to enhance their prestigious Stevens education.

Innovation and entrepreneurship is stressed at Stevens Institute of Technology, a research-intensive school primarily known for its engineering, science and management programs. The school also has a humanities division with eight majors. Undergraduate students are encouraged to get involved in research projects and develop new technologies through the school's Technogenesis philosophy.

Students can opt for a cooperative education track which is a five-year program with mostly alternating semesters of class and full-time, paid work.

SIT has four academic schools:

  • the School of Business,
  • the School of Systems & Enterprises,
  • the College of Arts and Letters,
  • the Charles V. Schaefer Jr. School of Engineering and Science.

All the schools are located on the Hoboken campus along with several halls of residence, restaurants and sports facilities. The small city of Hoboken provides a comfortable learning environment while the bright lights of New York are only a short journey away.

As well as a host of research institutes, SIT also maintains three national research Centres of Excellence. The Maritime Security Centre investigates port and maritime security, while the Systems Engineering Research Centre is affiliated with the US Department of Defence. The leest Centre of Excellence is the Atlantic Centre for the Innovative Design and Control of Small Ships which combines engineering disciplines and shipbuilding.

Some hugely influential people have studied at SIT over the years. The co-founder of General Motors Charles Stewart Mott graduated from SIT in 1897. Alfred Fielding, co-inventor of bubble wrap also studied there.

The U.S. News National University Rankings 2016 place SIT the 71st nationally. The Washington Monthly National Universities Rankings 2016 places the university the 166th.
