Northwestern University

Overview

On May 31, 1850, nine men gathered to begin planning a university that would serve the Northwest Territory of the United States of America. Given that they had little money, no land and limited higher education experience, their vision was ambitious. But through a combination of creative financing, shrewd politicking, religious inspiration and an abundance of hard work, the founders of Northwestern University were able to make that dream a reality.

Today Northwestern University (NU) is a private research university based in Evanston, Illinois, with campuses in Chicago, Illinois, San Francisco, California and Doha, Qatar. Composed of twelve schools and colleges, Northwestern offers more than 120 undergraduate and more than 140 graduate and professional degrees.

Northwestern University is a founding member of the Big Ten Conference, which policies regulate intercollegiate athletics in the USA and remains the only private university in the conference. The Northwestern’s team Wildcats compete in 19 intercollegiate sports in the country.

Among Northwestern University's more notable alumni are U.S. Senator and presidential candidate George McGovern, Nobel Prize-winning economist George J. Stigler, Nobel Prize-winning novelist Saul Bellow, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and diarist Ned Rorem.
