Loyola University Chicago

Overview

Loyola University Chicago (LUC) is a private American Catholic university. Founded in 1870 by the Jesuits, today Loyola is a major contributor to Chicago's economic and cultural capital.

The school has two locations in Chicago – Lake Shore and Water Tower – where on-campus living is separated between freshmen, sophomores and all upperclassmen. The university also has an international campus four miles from downtown Rome where about 400 students study abroad each year.

Comprising eleven colleges and schools, Loyola offers over 80 undergraduate and 140 graduate/professional programs and enrolls approximately 16,000 students in total. Its main Lake Shore campus is on the banks of Lake Michigan, while the Water Tower campus is right in the city centre, a stone’s throw from Chicago’s “Magnificent Mile”.

With the acceptance rate of about 63%, the university is slightly challenging to get in. 

The third most populous city in the US, Chicago is famous for its food, sports champions, theatres, concert venues and 500-plus parks. The birthplace of the skyscraper, Chicago’s skyline is adorned with iconic buildings.

Notable Loyola alumni include Michael Quinlan - former CEO of McDonald's Corp. Michael R. Quinlan, McDonald's Corporation Chairman, Thomas Schoewe - CFO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., William M. Daley - President Obama’s chief of staff and many others.

Loyola University Chicago is consistently ranked among the top 100 National Universities according to the 2016 U.S. News & World Report college rankings. U.S. News commonly places Loyola among their fifty "Best Value" colleges as well. U.S. 

News National University Rankings 2016 placed it the 99th. Loyola is among a select group of universities recognized for community service and engagement by prestigious national organizations like the Carnegie Foundation and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Location

Loyola has six campuses located across the Chicago metropolitan area, as well as a campus in Rome and guest programs in Beijing and Ho Chi Minh City. The Lake Shore Campus is located along the shores of Lake Michigan in the Rogers Park and Edgewater neighborhoods of Chicago, eight miles north of the Loop.
