Overview

Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague is one of the largest universities in the Czech Republic, and is one of the oldest institutes of technology in Central Europe. Emperor Joseph I established the university first as the Institute of Engineering Education in 1707.

Currently about 22 000 students are enrolled at eight faculties and five institutes, covering a total of 132 accredited bachelor, master and PhD studyprogrammes 482 fields of study within these programmes.

The University has built up strong bonds with its industrial partners, including important world-scale players, such as Toyota, Skanska, Bosch, Siemens, Honeywell, GE, Rockwell, ABB, McKinsey, DaimlerChrysler, and Skoda-Volkswagen. CTU alumni work as engineers and/or managers in these companies.

In 2016, CTU was ranked between 501st and 550th place out of 4,200 universities worldwide in the QS World University Rankings, which is published in the Times Educational Supplement.

Many great personalities have graduated from CTU, including the famous physicist Christian Doppler, notable chemists such as Vladimir Prelog, renowned engineers such as F. J. Gerstner and J. Bozek, the first president of the Czech Republic Václav Havel, inventor of modern soft contact lenses Otto Wichterle, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic Vlastimil Picek and many others.

Academic specialism

CTU currently has eight faculties. The oldest and the biggest among them by the number of students are the Faculties of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Nuclear Science and Physical Engineering.
