Sociology Semester 1: Power and inequalities in society, lays the foundations for understanding sociological theories and concepts, as applied to the study of inequalities by class, gender and ethnicity. Semester 2: Social change and social institutions; plus may also include: the sociology of families; religion; media; theory of change; McDonaldisation. Psychology Semester 1: Introduction to psychological enquiry, focuses on designing research and statistical analysis of data; it also provides a historical and theoretical background to understanding psychology. Semester 2: Social and developmental psychology, gives an insight into the major topics in social psychology and into the psychology of the developing child; psycho-biology and cognition, focuses on the brain and nervous system in information processing, perception, memory, attention, language and thought. English Semesters 1 and 2: Introduction to the study of literature is a genre-based double module, which examines poetry, drama and the novel; texts are studied from the Elizabethans to the modern age and there is an introduction to critical theory and analysis; the aim of the course is to build confidence in reading, writing and discussing literature, and for students to develop their own critical abilities. Criminology Semester 1: Crime and society: looks at definitions of crime, the effects of the media and issues like race and gender within the criminal justice system. Semester 2: Key thinkers in criminology: introduces students to the foundational thinkers in criminology and the ideas and practices that informed these thoughts.
