Entry requirements

  • The main criterion for admission to an MA course in the Department of Politics is a 2.1 BA degree or international equivalent. However, exceptions are sometimes made for students with different backgrounds, in which case assessment is usefully done through interview and additional references. Each MA employs slightly different criteria suited to its subject domain and therefore detailed inquiries should be made to individual MA convenors.
  • English language requirements: The Department of Politics has a higher minimum level than the university more generally, because of the more difficult nature of the literature that Politics students must engage with. The departmental requirements are: IELTS: 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each component)

As far as the Department is concerned, there is no formal deadline for the receipt of applications, but most funding bodies have strict deadlines which you should be aware of.  Students who require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK should also allow 4-6 weeks to obtain the necessary visa before term starts.

You can apply online.

The University may ask you for the following documents:

  • Academic transcript - mandatory;
  • Copy of a language certificate - mandatory;
  • Personal statement - mandatory;
  • Two academic references (although applicants who have been in employment for a number of years could also submit one professional reference) - mandatory;
  • Your CV (curriculum vitae) - optional;
  • Evidence of financial support - optional;
  • Specified written work - optional;
  • Second piece of written work - optional.

Location

York is regularly voted one of the best places to live and visit in the UK. The city was named the best place to live in Britain by The Sunday Times 2018. Our excellent cafés, restaurants and bars, innovative industries and mixture of modern and medieval architecture propelled it to the top of the list. With a population of 200,000, it’s big enough to feel lively but small enough to feel like home.

York is situated only 2 hours away from London and 1 and a half hours away from Manchester by train. The city benefits of some of the best train connections in the country, linking York to every corner of the UK.
