Sport studies Year 1: Offers a comprehensive overview of the study of sport; emphasis is placed upon sport development, studying sport in a social and historical context, and learning about investigative techniques; there is also the opportunity to explore aspects of teaching and coaching and to gain a valuable insight into the scientific principles of sport and exercise. Year 2: Students consider power relations in sport in a social and historical context as well as a range of major issues and controversies that have emerged in sport and physical education; the role and function of sports development within society, and the resulting policies and planning, are evaluated; students also continue to consider the role and function of sport development within society. Year 3: Students embark upon independent study and produce a dissertation; the study of sport in a social context focuses on effective research design, methods and analysis; students also expand their knowledge of the organisation of sports in Britain. Deaf studies Year 1: Provides students with invaluable insight into key disability issues and related D/deaf perspectives; it also introduces students to British Sign Language (BSL), and to sign linguistics. Year 2: Brings a sharp focus on the D/deaf community itself, including D/deaf issues in disability practices; it also investigates the fascinating subject of deafness and language development Year 3: Explores key themes of deaf blind policies and practices technological issues related to deafness; students also have the opportunity to enhance their BSL skills as well as the option to work or research within the deaf community.
