Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick is one of the largest and most highly-ranked Politics departments in the UK and internationally. We consistently appear in the top 10 of every ranking system produced by the UK government and media organisations.
Our students graduate with very good career prospects in a variety of fields including government, law, business, international organisations, and the media.
The MA in International Security is one of the most comprehensive international security graduate programmes in the country. It is taught by a range of staff who are at the cutting edge of international security research and reflects this core area of research strength within the department.
International security concerns have been particularly prominent in international politics and in the media in the last few years. This prominence is related to the dramatic events of September 11, 2001, the apparently ‘new’ threat of global terrorism, the spectre of nuclear proliferation, the contestation over military intervention in Iraq and the increasingly common suggestion that issues such as climate change- with the capacity to undermine the sustainability of life on the planet- should be viewed and approached as ‘security’ issues. And while often less prominent in the media, forgotten conflicts throughout the world (for example in Sudan) continue to take the lives of thousands of people every year, while a range of pressing issues, such as disease and immigration, have also been linked to contemporary debates about security.
The campus occupies 290 hectares on three adjacent sites, which are characterised by pleasant lakes and luscious woods, magnificent flowers and charming landscaped gardens.
The University of Warwick is within 3 miles away from the centre of Coventry, one of the major cities in the UK. Each year Coventry hosts the Godiva Festival, known as the UK’s biggest and best free family music festival. You can also enjoy award-winning city attractions such as the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum and the Coventry Transport Museum.
The 18th century town of Royal Leamington Spa is also within easy reach of campus: it’s home to lots of Warwick students. Plus, Birmingham, the UK’s official second city, is a mere 20 minutes away from Coventry train station. Or the bright lights of London are just an hour’s train journey away.
We’re also close to historic centres like Kenilworth, Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace. London is within 2 hours by train.
