For a substantial part of the course, students study alongside those planning to teach the same specialist subject; at other times students study in a larger group, alongside those planning to teach other subjects at post-16 (from leisure and tourism to music technology and beyond); this provides a basis to achieve the full professional status of Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) after the required period of professional formation working in the sector; students deepen their understanding of English language, literacy or numeracy and mathematics (as appropriate) as a subject area; this includes knowledge of key questions, theories and concepts in the chosen subject, as well as the development of the student's own personal skills in the subject area; students develop a range of learning and teaching methods and strategies in their subject, and develop understanding of the diverse needs of learners; students consider how the theories of learning and assessment can be applied to the teaching of their subject; students are encouraged to analyse and critique policies and practices relating to the teaching of their subject, and to develop their own considered approach to teaching language, literacy or numeracy; the placement in 1 of the partner colleges in South Wales is a central feature of the course, where students can develop professionally as an ESOL, Literacy or Numeracy teacher with the support of an experienced subject specialist.
