This course explores the issues raised by the interdisciplinary study of the 18th century; students work with a range of sources to contextualise works in detail, and to initiate wider thematic discussions; students examine a variety of source materials, from novels and poetry, through newspapers and letters, to paintings and artefacts; they consider a range of interpretative issues in the handling of such texts, and locate readings of 18th-century sources within the latest literary, historiographical and methodological debates.
