This course is based on a study of the aspects of the biological, ecological and physical sciences; these are particularly important for an understanding of the natural environment, and include field courses both in the UK and overseas; the programme is structured to provide a generic programme and several specialist routes; students’ can slant their degree towards areas of particular interest in global change, ecology and hydrology, biology in the environment and biology and evolution; ; level 1 involves modules in geography, earth science and biology; these introduce and explore the range of physical environments and ecosystems and provide a foundation for the rest of the course; Levels 2 and 3 pathways and modules develop and expand the framework of environmental knowledge, and build upon it with more specialised treatment of environmental science; an important component of level 3 is practical: students have the opportunity to carry out a field-based or laboratory-based project; in the 4th year, students benefit from advanced research in the 2 departments; the facilities include controlled environment chambers that simulate conditions ranging from the Tropics to the Arctic, experimental gardens and glasshouses, artificial stream systems, state of the art equipment for DNA, biomolecular and elemental analyses, numerical modelling, remote sensing and GIS, and extensive computing facilities.
