The 4 year degree course combines intensive study of the Japanese language with the opportunity to study a wide range of theories related to contemporary issues, political theory, and the discipline of political studies; the 3rd year of the course is spent at a partner universities in Japan, providing them with an excellent opportunity to enhance their language skills and to immerse themselves in Japanese society; the Japanese language is taught intensively from scratch, covering all the necessary skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing; students learn the phonetic scripts (kana) from the outset, and learn the roughly 2000 Sino-Japanese characters (kanji) needed over the 4 years of the course; by the end of the 1st year students have covered most of the core grammar of the language, and from the 2nd year of the course students start to deal with real texts, including newspapers, and students develop compositional, summary, translation and presentational skills in the language; The Sociology modules are designed to allow increasing specialisation throughout the degree; at level 1 students take 12 ten credit modules which introduce students to the fundamentals of sociological and policy analysis, and students study options from the department and wider University; at levels 2 and 3 their modules become more specialised; throughout their course students receive training in research techniques, information retrieval, group and presentational skills, study and analytical skills; in the final year all students write a long essay or dissertation on a subject of their own choice; this involves a sustained study project, which is individually supervised by a member of staff, and provides the opportunity for undertaking field research; students also have the opportunity to choose lecture-based modules covering a range of disciplines; in this dual degree students are introduced to the fundamentals of sociological and policy analysis, leading to more specialised courses at levels 2 and 3; students receive training in research techniques, information retrieval, group and presentational skills, and study and analytical skills throughout.
